The medical half.
Medicine stays medicine. Project Catalyst carries the medical half of the work: neuromodulation and interventional pain, and the person behind the pain.
It is governed apart from the social half. Its clinical build is held. Its clinical network is being stood up.
Two in five carry more than pain.
Among adults with chronic pain, about two in five carry depression, and about two in five carry anxiety.
JAMA Network Open, 2025, a meta-analysis of 376 studies.
Care that holds the whole person is not new.
Collaborative care brings depression care into the same plan as the rest of a person’s care. A Cochrane review gathered 79 randomized trials and 24,308 people.
In one trial of people with pain and depression, 37.4 percent saw their depression severity fall by at least half at 12 months with stepped care, against 16.5 percent with usual care.
Cochrane, 2012. SCAMP, JAMA, 2009.
Medicare is about to ask.
From January 2027, Medicare’s Ambulatory Specialty Model will score many pain specialists, in selected regions, on depression screening with a follow-up plan for people with low back pain.
Medicine contributes to a class it does not own.
Clinical neuromodulation, magnetic stimulation for treatment-resistant depression, belongs to one class, Neuroplastic Therapeutics, with prayer, contemplative practice, the steps and the recovery community. Faith and recovery come first in its order; clinical care comes third, as the ramp and never the destination, with promising tools of every kind on the horizon.
Teaching for pain and neuromodulation teams.
A clinical teaching on the durability of relief and the person behind it, for practices, fellowships, health systems and conferences. One curriculum, in four lengths: grand rounds, a fellowship module, a half day, and a conference session.
